SEND
At Lutley Primary School, our aim is to do all we can to promote the development, independence and progress of our children including those with additional needs. All children are entitled to an education that enables them to make progress so that they: achieve their best, become confident individuals living fulfilling lives, and make a successful transition to the next stage of their education.
We are committed to the equal inclusion of all pupils in all areas of primary school life. We recognise the diverse and individual needs of all of our pupils and take into account the additional support required by those children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We always try our very best to meet the needs of all pupils.
This SEND Information Report should be read alongside the school’s SEND Policy, and the school’s Accessibility Plan. Our School’s SEND Information Report explains what we offer children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) throughout their time with us. It explains how we support them on to the next stage of their education. Our SEND policy gives more detail about our statutory duties and day to day procedures – for example how we plan the most effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and how we review their progress.
From the 1st September 2014 the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice 0-25 Years became a legislative document. It makes the following definitions:
SEN – “A pupil has SEN where their learning difficulty or disability calls for special educational provision, namely provision different from or additional to that normally available to pupils of the same age.”
Learning Difficulty– “A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:
- Has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others the same age, or
- Has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.”
Disability – “A physical or mental impairment which has a long term (a year or more) and substantial (more than minor or trivial) adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.”
“This definition includes sensory impairments such as those affecting sight or hearing, and long term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and cancer. Children and young people with such conditions do not necessarily have SEN, but there is a significant overlap between disabled children and young people and those with SEN. Where a disabled
child or young person requires special educational provision they will also be covered by the SEN definition.”
If you would like to discuss your child’s special educational needs further, please do not hesitate to contact the school office to make an appointment with our SEND team.
